About the Greater Westmoreland Arts Coalition (GWAC)

Where Art, Community, and Collaboration Thrive

The Greater Westmoreland Arts Coalition (GWAC) was formed to serve a simple but transformative purpose: to unite the arts community across Westmoreland and surrounding rural regions through collaboration, visibility, and shared opportunity.
What began in 2018 as informal conversations among gallery owners, artists, and art leaders grew into a powerful realization—that a stronger, more connected arts ecosystem would benefit everyone. In 2023, that momentum became formalized. Artists, nonprofit leaders, and creative entrepreneurs began designing a regional strategy under one unifying banner: the Greater Westmoreland Arts Coalition.

Our mission is clear: to collaboratively promote awareness of the arts and the sustainability of arts organizations in the Westmoreland region.

A Collaborative Network, Not Just a Platform

For 18 months, sixteen arts leaders have contributed to GWAC’s foundation, helping shape its Bylaws, Cooperative Agreements, and strategic priorities. Together, we’re building more than a network—we’re creating a regional arts identity.

Our first public-facing priority is the development of an easy-to-navigate digital platform that will:

  • Spotlight artists, events, and organizations across all artistic disciplines
  • Offer a centralized Arts Directory to connect users with services, venues, and talent
  • Serve as a dynamic Art Trail Map that evolves with the region, highlighting local creativity and destinations

This fast growing “one-stop-shop” model already  has over one hundred members and ensures that both residents and visitors can explore Westmoreland’s creative economy with clarity and ease.

Hosted by River Art Works—Powered by Purpose

GWAC is a program hosted by River Art Works (RAW), a nonprofit dedicated to transforming rural arts access and economic potential. RAW’s mission is to lay the groundwork for a regional hub that uplifts both traditional and contemporary arts—and to strengthen rural artists’ reach by developing infrastructure, creative technologies, and sustainable business support.

Through GWAC, RAW is helping bridge gaps in visibility, marketing, and collaboration. The digital platform will integrate:

  • Free basic listing to all approved artists
  • Opportunities for enhanced artist/business listings and sponsorships
  • Publicly accessible tools to promote tourism, creative commerce, and regional identity

Serving the Full Creative Landscape

GWAC and its platform are built to serve:

  • Independent artists and creatives
  • Small and mid-sized arts organizations
  • Cultural event producers
  • Art-based businesses and venues

Our commitment is to equity, representation, and ease of access—ensuring that every voice in the creative community has a place to be seen, heard, and supported.

A Living, Evolving Community Resource

The Greater Westmoreland Arts Coalition is more than a website—it’s a living, evolving community resource. As new partnerships form and creative ideas take root, GWAC will continue to reflect the richness, ingenuity, and authenticity of our region’s arts. Whether you’re a collector, a visitor, a performer, or a student, GWAC will be your entry point into a vibrant cultural world right here in the heart of Pennsylvania.
